Wouter Ghyoot, Vice-President Government Affairs at Umicore 12/12/2024 - 12h00 | Conference Lunch SEII

Déjeuner Conférence organisé par la Société Européenne des Ingénieurs et des Industriels (SEII).
“Umicore’s approach to decarbonisation of complex metallurgical and chemical processes to manufacture low carbon footprint metals and products”
The role of these low carbon footprint materials in the energy transition
Umicore is a circular materials technology company.
Practically, it means that the company equips precious and critical metals with functionality, mostly for clean mobility applications, such as battery materials for electric vehicles and catalysts for clean air. Umicore also recycles those metals so they can be put back into the loop for new use in the same applications. Umicore has a global footprint with 44 production and 15 R&D sites and employs 11500 people.
Umicore’s programme called “Let’s go for Zero” and which contains the pillars on Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) will be explained. An essential part of the ESG strategy relates to decarbonisation. Umicore’s ambition is to become Net Zero by 2035 in Scope 1 and 2 (defined hereafter).
This requires the decarbonisation of manufacturing processes (Scope 1) and the decarbonisation of the energy purchased (Scope 2). There is also a decarbonisation strategy for the raw materials which are purchased from third parties (Scope 3). This decarbonisation strategy will result in the manufacturing of low carbon products which are essential to Umicore’s customers.
Given the complexity of the metallurgical and chemical processes, the decarbonisation of Scope 1 requires a trajectory including research & development and piloting, and new approaches to manufacturing at large scale. This talk will also explain in what applications the products of Umicore are used and what the importance is of being able to offer low carbon products to the market.
The contribution of recycling to closing the loop and thus circularity of materials will be highlighted also in the context of contributing to decarbonisation.
