« Seeking collective responses to historic challenges – The priorities of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU 2024 »
On the 1st of July, Hungary began its six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will run until December 2024.
Hungary has been working as an honest broker, in the spirit of sincere cooperation between member states and institutions, for the peace, security and prosperity of a truly strong Europe.
The first months of the presidency has been dominated by the institutional changes brought about by the European elections in June. The Hungarian presidency has started to seek collective responses to the historic challenges the EU is facing.
Hungary aims to focus on improving European competitiveness, including the adoption of the New European Competitiveness Deal and the reinforcement of European Defence Policy, with particular emphasis on strengthening the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base on a European level.
Stemming illegal migration is another key priority of the Hungarian presidency, who also aims to address demographic challenges, shaping the future of the Cohesion Policy, promote a merit based and consistent Enlargement Policy and a farmer-centred EU Agricultural Policy.
