« Ocean Energy: a new enabler for the energy transition »
Technology, benefits, projects and future development


Ocean energy is a limitless, indigenous source of power, right on our doorstep. Ocean energy technologies exploit the power of tides and waves, as well as differences in sea temperatures and salinity, to produce electricity.

The "size of the prize" for commercialising ocean energy is huge. In Europe alone, the ocean energy industry plans to deploy over 100GW of production capacity by 2050, meeting 10% of electricity demand. That’s enough to meet the daily electricity needs of 94 million households.

Its predictability makes it an ideal balancing partner for wind and solar as it produces at different times. Which in current grid systems is a unique selling point.

Developing ocean energy will bring huge economic benefits, creating jobs in Europe, and leading a huge global export market.

Recent technological developments will see up to 15 projects get in the water in the next 4 years, all supported by EU or national funding as well as private investment. This is very much the start of industrialisation for Ocean Energy and will kick-start economies of scale, cost reductions and mass production for a more efficient, cheaper, independent energy solution for Europe.


Prior to his policy engagement, Rémi Gruet worked for 6 years in various industries in Germany and the UK. He spent the last 20 years influencing the European energy agenda, from within the European Parliament first, and Wind Europe next. He joined OEE in 2013 to bring innovative ocean energy to industrialisation.

He is a leading authority on renewable energies, climate and environment policy, and authored several reports, such as “Wind Energy and Climate Policy”, the “Ocean Energy Forum Roadmap” or the recent “Powering Homes” report. He is a visiting lecturer on EU energy policy at the University for Political Science in Lille, France.
